The first thing you should know about Capguns ‘N’ Coke us that they are four lads from Surrey. The second is that they play cracking old school pop punk in the vein of Screeching Weasel. And the third is that they are aged 14-16.
That last point is mentioned not to patronise in a “Ohhh aren’t you good for your age!” kind of way, but because it’s reassuring to hear a young generation of kids still taking their pointers from the bands who started it all, and moreover doing it very effectively indeed. This demo is filled with quality examples of melody and harmony used in a simple and effective way. There’s variation to be found though, with third track ‘Livin’ Like There’s No Tommorow’ having a distinctly street punk feel to it with its scraping riffs and raw harmonies in the chorus. Final track ‘Punk Rock Party’ finishes things on a peak with a rip-roaring anthem loaded with spirit, and including a good old dirty solo.
Capguns ‘N’ Coke are obviously far from the finished article, but given a bit more depth and variation, and some work on the vocals (especially those important held notes) we have the initial blueprints here for something special.
