Calls Landing – We Wont Sleep ‘Til It Happens Vol. 1

By Tom Aylott

CALLS LANDING’s latest five tracker isn’t going to change the world, and it certainly isn’t the best thing the band will ever do, but it’s a great stepping stone to their next release.

‘We Wont Sleep ‘Til It Happens Vol. 1’ sees the band occupy a sort of middle ground between the relatively in vogue US pop-punk of bands like THE WONDER YEARS and the alternative rock found closer to home from bands like THE XCERTS and FUTURES, and they’ve got a decent enough balance between it all to potentially have a wide appeal.

Opener ‘London Gentlemen’ has the right blend of pace and melody to grab the listener’s attention straight away, and though ‘Midnight At Millenium Square’ doesn’t quite live up to the standards of the 3 tracks that follow it (disregarding the slightly fumbled key change of ‘Strawberry Ribena’), the general standard is high enough that it doesn’t matter.

It’d be great to see the band use this EP as a solid foundation for their next release because they display all the hallmarks of a band that could go on and do something great, but they admittedly have a way to go to forge a truly unique sound and make those good choruses great.

Hopefully that’s something that just requires a bit of time though, and ‘We Wont Sleep ‘Til It Happens Vol. 1’ certainly shows the signs that can go on to do bigger things.
