Buffcode are a three-piece and this four-track EP is the culmination of four days hard work with producer extraordinaire Iain Wetherall. ‘re: Your Letter’ may sound like a horribly clichéd name for a horribly clichéd post-hardcore record, but from the opening moments of the first track you’ll breath a sigh of relief – for the machine gun drumming and dual vocals sound like old-skool Blink 182 and The Vandals if they’d not gone down the silly route.
The thing about Buffcode is that they do everything right – the vocals are solid and good, the guitars shred in places and the drums are faster and more furious than Nicholas Cage behind the wheel of a sports car. But…and I hate to say but, the songs aren’t quite strong enough just yet. In places the band sound like Phinius Gage, which is great, but lack the killer hook or melody to match the Gage at the next level. ‘Without A Care’ is a great song, but I’m left thinking with a little bit more time and effort and attention to detail, Buffcode could be pretty darn great. It’s like putting a 1000-piece puzzle together – you’ve got all the bits, they just need to be put in the right places.
