This is the third demo from London based emo-rockers Brunswick and while I swore blindly that I’d never review a 2-track demo again, this is actually quite good. I guess rules are made to be broken. Mark reviewed their last demo a few months back and suggested bigger things were to come, and by Jove, he might be right. This untitled two-tracker was produced by Adam Ellis (of My Awesome Compilation fame) and really does suggest these guys will be a band to watch in 2005.
They play a brand of anthemic emo rock that certainly has its indie foundations. At times the band suggest they would fit on the Deep Elm roster, while at others they remind me of bands like Snow Patrol. What they do very well is create catchy singalong tracks with a knack for creeping in a massive hook. It’s almost sneaked in under the radar at times, that’s how clever they are at sneaking in the big choruses. Opener ‘Promise’ is a really, really good song, building up with catchy guitar riffs and piano interludes while the second track, ‘Hold On’, showcases the band’s more lo-fit roots.
If this is a sign of what is to come, Brunswick will make some noise next year. What they need to do now is write five or six songs with the style they’ve showcased here and let that music do the talking. It’s ok recording two songs at a time, but this has left me wanting a little more. Perhaps that’s the point, but if the band wants to take things to the next level, they’ve built themselves a nice platform to launch from.
