Beyond All Reason – Words of Betrayal

By paul

With Thrice and Coheed and Cambria about to explode in a major label funded combustible bursting device (ok, that made no sense but you know what I’m getting at), there’s no reason why Beyond All Reason won’t do well this year. After coming out of nowhere to gain national recognition in a variety of weekly and monthly music magazines – and Radio 1 airplay – jumping on the wave that C&C will inevitably create is a guarantee. That’s not to say the band aren’t talented enough themselves, but the inevitable comparisons will do their reputation no harm.

‘Words of Betrayal’ has a little FFAF circa ‘Hours’ feel to it. The guitars are very clean and very ‘metal’ sounding with plenty of lead riffs peeled off. Paul Ventress’ vocals sound a lot like Matt Davies’ on ‘This September’, which incidentally is one of the worst songs here. Songs like ‘Is This My Last Lie’ and ‘Perfume and MakeUp’, however, come across like Claudio Sanchez covering Thrice songs, such is the vocal power and general high-pitchedness. This is a real British rock record that shows plenty of promise and potential and a few choice support slots could well send Beyond All Reason onto the next level.
