Bayonets – The Joke and the Damage Done

By paul

By the time this review is uploaded, Bayonets will be about ready to play their final show before calling it quits. This single, released via Pandycane, is their departing gift and it’s an excellent little finale for a band that didn’t quite reach the heady heights they threatened. Bayonets, formerly on Walnut Tree, have always been solid songwriters but their ideas didn’t always translate perfectly. There’s always been a bit of a Brand New-ism about them and that shines through on this three-tracker’s title track. Incidentally ‘Honiara’ is the best of the songs here, the gang vocals and the stripped down acoustic guitar break this down to sound quite desperate and fragile and it suits the band really, really well. They will undoubtedly be missed.
