Atwood – London Gentleman

By paul

If Tellison started writing really poppy songs and took lessons off The Wombats you wouldn’t be far away from Atwood. They’re a bunch of Brummies who have sent me a number of demos and they’ve grown into quite the tidy band. This five-tracker on Pep Rock is a chipper and tasty affair, choc-full of choppy guitars and multi-layered vocal harmonies. ‘Cameras’ is a fantastic tune and a great way to kick this record off. The missus said she thought it sounded like The Wombats, without the quirky accents, and I tend to agree. It has a really sweet chorus and a nifty vocal line and is up there as one of the best tracks from a UK band in terms of this genre of music.

The EP follows on with the title track and is another foot-tapper which will have you singing along and smiling in an instant. It’s a charm the band nail consistently on this record and, as it’s short and sweet in length, it sets the scene and leaves you wanting more. Atwood have grown with each release and these songs are by far their best. Very good work – these chaps could be your new favourite UK band…
