Attack In Black – Widows EP

By paul

Punknews.org described Attack In Black as ‘beard punk’, which suits them down to the ground. In various different places they remind me of mixes of Lawrence Arms, Weakerthans and other bearded types. Which is rather nice. While hailing from Canada, Attack In Black would arguably be more at home in gainesville, with their sound owing more to the No Idea stable (albeit in a more melodic way) than some of their Canadian peers like Alexisonfire and Cancer Bats.

This four-tracker is an excellent introduction to the band and each of the songs is strong in its own way. Vocally the band are distinctive; ‘Broken Things’ and ‘1950’ particularly stand out in this way, a bit like Rise Against in the way the vocals often dominate musically. The opening track has a definite Against Me! leaning, although it does feature some kind of brass instrumentation too. I think what I like most about this band is their willingness to break wth convention and sound different, yet similar, on each track. And in keeping things interesting it makes repeat listens enjoyable. As a taster for things to come, ‘Widows’ offers plenty of promise indeed.
