The four tracks which make up this EP would suggest Analogue Robots Attack are actually four completely different bands, such is the strange mix of influences on show. Going from sounding like a My Awesome Compilation covers band, to a HelloGoodbye cover band, to something a little less generic – all in the space of 10 minutes – it’s confusing to fathom out which band really sounds the most like ARA. Will the real Analogue Robots Attack please stand up?
‘Intro Song #2’ could easily be a MAC b-side. It’s actually a good song, certainly better than ‘Let’s All Have A Disco’ anyway, but as bands have already nailed that sound, it’s all a little seen and heard it all before. ‘Get Up Sing Out’ is a lot more synth heavy, with a driving guitar riff and samples which, if the vocals were a little better produced, would possibly be a minor hit. Again it’s quite a good song and I can imagine would be well received at 2am at your local rock club, although the ideas are again a little borrowed.
Then we get onto the more rock-driven ‘Implications of Infatuation’, which sounds a bit more sensible than the previous two songs (even a little The Maple State-y?), followed by the glorious ‘It’s Hard To Forget’ which may be the pick of the bunch. A good band, without a shadow of a doubt, I just feel the band aren’t comfortable in their own skin and end up sounding a little different each time. And while variety is the spice of life, honing their sound a little could really reap the Robots rewards.
