Hailing from Reno, Nevada, A Moments Loss‘ new record, ‘The Forgetting’, is an eight track and 40 minute emotional rollercoaster, wearing influences such as Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate and Appleseed Cast firmly on their sleeve. Imagine long, drawn out songs interspersed with metallic lead guitar riffs and spaced out vocals, all thrown into a large melting pot with some weird and wonderful time signature changes. The one thing you cannot deny this band is that they are interesting at least. However, over the course of eight songs this does start to grate a little and the songs do begin to sound a bit similar – maybe shaving a song or two off the tracklisting would have served better as an introduction to the band.
The band themselves suggest there’s a Sigur Ros or Pink Floyd aspect to their songwriting, and by that I assume they mean their songs are drawn out longer than they need to be. A Moments Loss certainly aren’t in the same league, either with ingenuity or class, as those two, although I guess I can see why people may make the comparison. On ‘Big (Empty) Sky’ the band’s guitars sprawl out in the same way bands like Appleseed Cast and, on their last record anyway, Settlefish, have done for a while. Vocally the band do well – the melodies are tight and the switch from the relaxing to the aggressive is done well. There are better bands that do this kind of thing, but A Moments Loss are certainly on the right track and are worthy of your attention. ‘Mere Death’ and ‘Agony and Ecstacy’ are probably two very worthy starting points if you’re looking to check them out.
