3 Day Benda – Sounds of the Suburbs

By paul

Acting as a four-track sampler to their forthcoming full lengther, Portsmouth’s 3 Day Benda have released a CD filled full of choppy ska rythmns and horn-based joy to get a bit of publicity. The first thing to note about this band, dodgy name aside, is that they have more members than the cast of Lostthe team photo seems to go on for miles with people popping up out of every corner. OK, so it’s only eight, but still…

The four tracks here are all reasonably good, but truth be told there’s nothing that grabs me by the short and curlies and makes me want to listen – bands like Failsafe, who have a similar sound, have an x-factor which 3DB seem to lack. So while ‘Elements of Confusion’ and ‘The Understanding’ are both far better than the average ska band, they don’t quite have the zip needed to propel the band to the premier league. On the basis of just four tracks it is very difficult to gauge fully how good this band are, but on what I’ve heard so far 3 Day Benda are good but not great. I await the full album…
