2*sweet – Sleep Without Dreams

By paul

Dreadful, dreadful band name. Utterly dreadful. Good news is that the band are better, although their ambitious take on out-grandiose-ing (if that’s a word) Panic at the Disco doesn’t quite come off. Panic do it catchier, The Audition do it simpler. 2*Sweet try a little too hard to be big and overblown and catchy and while it works at times, ‘King Midas’ Desert’ is a real tune, all too often it just doesn’t work in the way you assume the band intend it to. It’s not bad, just messy – too many ideas and not often enough do they work. The guitars are good, the vocals an acquired taste, but ultimately there aren’t enough catchy choruses to really make this sound anything different from the myriad of other dance-punk bands around right now.
