The Sleeping dropped their new album ‘The Big Deep’ last month, and we wanted to hear about it from the horses mouth. Doug Robinson filled us in:

So the Sleeping are back with a new album ‘The Big Deep’. We understand you headed out to rural Woodstock, New York to record it. Why did you decide to head up there?

Well, out of our four records.. this is our third with Mike Birnbaum and Chris Bittner. We recorded our first two with them. When we recruited Paul and Chris to the band, we started writing for What It Takes (Our third album) and we felt it was only fair to step into a different recording experience so we can all experience something new and fresh together. So, we went with Brian McTernan at Salad Days Studio. It was a cool experience but our hearts were pretty much always set on Mike and Chris. As soon as we finished What It Takes we knew we would be heading back to Woodstock. Mike and Chris are like family to us and we really feel a lot of The Sleeping‘s sound comes from that bond.

How much influence did the location have on the sound of the new album. How different would ‘The Big Deep’ sound if you recorded it in NYC?

I don’t know how it would sound if we recorded it in NYC, maybe it wouldn’t have as organic of a vibe. But I can definitely say that recording this record in Woodstock had a huge influence on its sound, even more than the first two records we recorded there. Out of all four of our releases, we have NEVER recorded in the summer until this last album. It’s just rad to be able to ride bikes into town together and experience what Woodstock means to the people who live there. It’s a beautiful place that breathes music. There are always bands playing outside in the center of town, drum circles, people who never left Woodstock after the fest (we call them Gnomes), etc. It’s actually insane during the summer. We weren’t confined to our cabin this time around and that had a major influence on the record. The title, ‘The Big Deep’ not only fit with the lyrical theme of the record… but it’s also the name of a famous swim hole in Woodstock where we would go after and between sessions. Everything just seemed to fit perfectly this time around.

We understand Douglas temporarily relocated to LA before recording the album. How much strain did that put on the creative process?

It actually wasn’t too strenuous, writing wise. We had just gotten off of a long tour and were taking a little while off before writing for The Big Deep. It was really hard on me because my band is my family but it was something I had to do. I had to get away for a while and try and figure myself out. A lot of shit was happening to me in NY and I had to relocate. When I got back we started writing our asses off and The Big Deep started coming into fruition.

How has The Sleeping‘s sound progressed since 2009’s ‘What It Takes’?

In my opinion, we’ve become much better song writers. Everyone stepped up their playing immensely but it’s the song writing I’m most proud of. We were able to still maintain a certain style we have always had as The Sleeping but hone in on our song writing skills. What It Takes was a much more aggressive record. I am super proud of everything we have ever created but if you listen to that record compared to The Big Deep, you can tell there was a lot of frustration and confusion within all of us. We are just at different places in our lives now. We are more appreciative of things and we kind of just went with the flow this time around.

The cover art depicts a suitcase laying open displaying its contents. How does the artwork tie into the theme of the album?

It’s pretty crazy actually. My roommate, Jeffrey Ramirez (www.allinvisiblethings.com) did the artwork. Before we even started writing for the record, I would call him on tour and we would talk about our lives and what was happening at the time. He knew about everything that was going on with me, all of my confusion and my need to get away for a while. I was at a super low point, mentally and physically and he knew all of this. When we had approached him about doing the artwork, he had already known so much of what was going on that it literally was a first time thing. Without music or lyrics, he had sent like one or two other ideas over but he specifically said, this one is my favourite… and it wound up being our favourite as well. Lyrically, the theme of this record has a lot to do with my running away from state to state. I travelled, mentally and physically, to try and get my shit together. So everything tied in better than we could have ever imagined. When you look at the layout, the cover of the record is an open suitcase, on grass, representing the start of a long and unpredictable journey. The contents in the suitcase represent “baggage,” mentally and/or physically. As you open each page, behind the lyrics, you’ll see different types of terrain… gravel, water, Etc. This represents the person travelling (or running away from things) to different places. Then, on the back cover, you’ll see the suitcase closed on a wooden floor, representing a return home… wherever that home is.

There’s a track on the album called ‘Deafening The UK’. What’s the story behind that?

The title was something Joe, our drummer, had said during one of our writing sessions and it just wound up sticking. We love the UK and Joe was saying how he could picture playing this song there and how rad it would be, so it stuck. The song itself is about my return from Los Angeles to NYC. I was just real bummed on not being with my friends and I was really depressed on being away from the band. I don’t regret that I moved there for a while to try and regroup but it just wasn’t for me. I realized I was running away from a lot of things I needed to face as an adult. So I had written about all of these feelings I had during the last few days of my experience living in Hollywood and how much I realized I missed and needed New York. It was kind like the last straw. I was happy there but not complete and that song basically explains all of these things.

Can we expect you guys back in the UK for shows any time soon?

Yes, we are trying to get back over there ASAP and it’s just a matter of time. We love it there and we’re doing our best to make it happen! Finally, you have thirty seconds to sell ‘The Big Deep’ to any potential listeners. Go! Please pick up our record, it would mean a lot to five hard working, honest musicians. If you download it then just make sure you’re at our shows but you should definitely pick up a physical copy and see how well the layout ties in with the lyrical content.

Paul: Hello! Which member of The Sleeping are you and what do you do in the band?
Doug: I am Douglas and I sing for the band.

Paul: Boring questions first…how did The Sleeping form and how did you come across the name?
Doug: We formed when Cameron’s old band Skycamefalling broke up. They looked for a singer online for their new project and out of the 22 singers they tried out I guess I seemed to be the least shittiest….so they picked me. We came up with the name when we realized all of our friends have shitty lives and are too scared to attempt living out their dream. So instead of making good money in a little cubical we are begging for money in casinos while playing music everyday, haha.

Paul: You’re signed to Victory, how did they come across you?
Doug: We were always friends with Victory bands and we would always crash with Victory staff while on tour. So one day Joe and Sal called up Tony from Victory straight up and said “Listen… we are going to make our music known everywhere and we won’t stop until we do…are you in or are you out?” Tony was in and we have been tight with our label since.

Paul: Both ‘Believe What We Tell You’ and ‘Questions and Answers’ have done pretty well, especially in the UK where you have a pretty sizeable fanbase, making you one of the label’s biggest bands. What do you think it is about the band that has translated so well over here?
Doug: I think people realize we are just normal dudes who don’t give a shit about impressing any certain type of crowd. We hang with our fans and we have a badass time partying. We take our music seriously on record and on stage but off stage we just want to meet people and flip out. We don’t try to be this band that is above people. We are just 4 dudes who want to have a good time doing what we love. I know a lot of bands play that role during interviews and then don’t give a fuck in real life, but we are for real… if you want to hang with us you can come to the merch and see for yourself… just buy us a drink. 🙂

Paul: On a similar note, are you surprised at how well you’ve been received in the UK?
Doug: Totally… we never thought that the UK would respond as well as it has been. People in the UK just want to have a good time and they come to see shows for the pure sake of seeing a band and hearing new music. The US is amazing to us also….but a lot of that vibe has been gone for a while. I LOVE touring the states but there still are some spots where kids just go to shows to think they are cool and/or hit other kids during heavy sets. That to us is a bunch of bullshit. I remember being 14 going to some of my first shows and leaving meeting some of my closest friends that I still have today….not leaving with a black eye thinking I was cool. If you want a black eye or if you want to tell someone the story of how you broke someones nose in a moshpit…then go see Disturbed.

Paul: You’re currently on tour with Fightstar. Have you played with those guys before? Are they good dudes to be around while on tour? How have the shows been?
Doug: We are still on the tour and it has honestly been pretty sweet. I have never heard of the band before this..all I have heard were stories about this dude named Charlie from another band that was huge in the UK and all that stuff, but he is just a normal dude like everyone else and he is a very awesome guy. We all drink together everynight and just talk about normal everyday things….not just band stuff. Their whole crew are good dudes as well. Its only been a few days on the tour and we have all already gotten pretty close. Those tours are always the best tours..when you meet people and you feel like you’ve known them for quite some time.

Paul: Moving slightly further ahead, what does the rest of the year hold for The Sleeping?
Doug: We have the Victory Records tour back in the states about a week after we get home from this tour. We are super pumped on it because it is with Bayside who are our closest friends on and off touring. It is also with A Day to Remember..we took them out on our first ever headline tour and they have pretty much become brothers ever since. I talk to those dudes more than I talk to my mom haha. We are super excited for it because it will be our last tour before we start writing and recording the NEW RECORD!!! Its always nice to end the touring cycle with bands that are family… so we are stoked.

Paul: It must be time for a new album…has the writing and recording process begun yet? Do you have any confirmed song/album names or even a possible release date?
Doug: Nothing confirmed yet…but we have done a lot of jamming and things are sounding very very sweet. We have all been through a lot more together as a whole and seperately as individuals, so all of us are very ready to start up the writing process. We know what we want to do as far as sound and that is to just be ourselves as always and what comes out will come out. We are just a bunch of smelly hippies who like to jam on ideas and take it from there… so get ready for more tweaked out sounds… 🙂

Paul: Will the new material throw up any surprises in terms of what we can expect, music-wise from you? Any new found love for folk or death metal going to influence your writing?
Doug: I personally, have actually gotten into a lot of Brit rock…as cheesy as that may sound being that I am writing this to you from the UK, but even before I came over a lot of good friends showed me some pretty sweet music from over here. Brandon from I Am the Avalanche got me into a band called the Kooks and I have been rocking a lot of Arctic Monkeys as well…but thats just me though. As for everyone else we have all gotten into some new shit but our writing is always what we want to write not what other bands sound like. So no matter what expect something different once again.

Paul: One of our readers wanted to know when you were next planning to come over for a headline tour…
Doug: We were going to try for later this year sometime…but I think its safe to say we will be back over here spring next year once the writing and recording is complete. Maybe we will test out a new song or two as well….tell that reader thank you for asking and we hope he or she isn’t sick of the old records by the time we head back. WAIT FOR US!!! haha.

Paul: Are there any plans to re-unite/re-form skycamefalling? I mean we’ve had Led Zep, The Spice Girls and, erm, Snapcase re-unite this year…
Doug: I wasn’t a member of SCF so I wouldn’t be able to answer that… but if you can get At the Drive In back together for me I promise I would do my best to ask the dudes about it.

Paul: Do you have any fun re-collections of the Victory Records UK tour? Any good road stories to share?
Doug: We honestly have tons of good stories to share. The UK Victory tour was just 3 straight weeks of rage, haha. I remember things like screaming at the top of our lungs to soccer/football chants in Dublin Ireland to Joe from the Audition Almost getting stabbed by a bum with a bottle. I had to walk out of the bar with one of those VIP poles that holds the ropes on each end. I heard he was about to get attacked and I grabed one of those and stood outside until the dude left, haha. It was pretty sweet even though I almost fell because I was hardly able to stand to begin with, wink wink.

Paul: Rumour has it you’re on Guitar Hero 3…how did that come about? Are you all fans? Which track is the most played on The Sleeping‘s bus?
Doug: Well… GH 3 is a secret so I guess you are just going to have to buy the game to find out 😉 As for us …we are definately into Guitar Hero. I am however, a Guitar ZERO!!! I suck so bad at that game I just like to play War Pigs on easy all the time because I bite the buttons and do knee slides when I play it. I usually get booed off the stage within like ten seconds. Everyone else is good at it but for some reason I suck horribly…and the worst is that I can play guitar hahaha.

Paul: If you could be in any computer game, which would it be and why?
Doug: Well… I am just going to say Nintendo Wii’s WII TENNIS. The reason why I am saying this is because I already am in it technically. Vinnie and Kellen from I am the Avalanche have it at their apartment and made characters for everyone who comes over and plays it. The first night I played it over there they made up a Doug character and it looks pretty identical to me. Its actually really funny to look at all of the characters because the whole bands in there and they all look like them. Except for Vinnie….his dude is a badass rasta with huge dreads and big eyes. Its the best character to any video game I have ever seen.

Paul: Finally, if you have a message for any of our readers, now would be a good time to leave it!
Doug: Live your life on your own terms….don’t get sucked into these bands that appeal to some people because of the way they dress or try to sound as cookie cutter as every other band doing the same thing out there. Its better to be different and start your own thing then to follow others because you think you have to. Open your mind and the rest will follow. Also… if you drink please cheers to us so that everytime you hold your glass up… say “The Sleeping are some cute dudes.” Get ready for a new record….peace out.

The Sleeping have just wrapped up their last UK performance on their current trek overseas. It’s barely ten minutes after their chaotic brand of post-hardcore antics have left the stage that a very sweaty, yet very content young man from Long Island, New York taps me on the shoulder to introduce himself. Once he’s said his thank you’s to many (and I mean MANY) excited teenage girls, we head off to where the band’s tourbus is parked to exchange a few words.

“Other than the fact that I’ve been sick, this tour has been so much fun. It’s so cool to come to a different country and be like ‘oh shit, I remember this place!’

Still wearing the same clothes he sweated massively into onstage not fifteen minutes ago, Doug Robinson is clearly very happy with how things are going for him and his band at the moment. “It’s definitely overwhelming coming back here, and to have people singing back my lyrics. It’s crazy, we’re from two completely different worlds that can come together through the music, and although it’s what we’ve been striving to do for a long time, it’s a really cool thing. I think ‘crazy’ is the word I’d use to describe it!

While they may be tearing things up stateside, The Sleeping are only just beginning to get some recognition over here in the UK. So how would Doug, the band’s frontman describe his troop to those who aren’t in the know? “I like to think we’re a very energetic, very experimental rock band with a lot of hardcore elements. When three of us guys used to be in skycamefalling, you’d expect a lot of hardcore elements to turn up in The Sleeping‘s music. We all love hardcore, and we all grew up listening to hardcore, especially coming from Long Island. It’s important for us to not lose the roots of the Tri-state area hardcore scene, so you can expect a lot of those elements in our music.”

But what about offstage? You’d expect such an energetic band to be partying hard as hell when they put their instruments down as well. “You know we’ve been doing a lot of sightseeing, and things like that. We’re hopefully going to make a trip to Stonehenge as well because that would be really cool. For the most part, we’ve just been getting to the venues, seeing how cold the venues are and realising that this is an actual job now, and not just a party! We always try to keep things on a fun level, but there’s definitely a lot of hardwork involved. Kids, if you want to be in a band – make sure you bust your ass, because it’s hardwork!”

Unless you’re completely out of the loop, you’ll have no doubt seen the Give It A Name Festival line-up for this year, which amongst others, Includes The Sleeping playing all three UK dates. “I’m very nervous about that, because it’s kind of like next-level stuff. Playing venues of that size we realise, ‘OK, now we’ve got to be on top of our game’. It’s not just coming to a venue, and hanging out with your friends anymore. It’s coming to a venue, running to see all different bands, trying to keep your voice, or warm up your hands, play the show, then go do more press. It’s going to be very nerve-wracking, but I’m very excited as well. We’ve played a couple of arenas with Taking Back Sunday and Fall Out Boy and that was fun, but it’s going to be nothing like this. On the other hand, being a music fan, I am so excited about seeing Jimmy Eat World. They’ve been one of my favourite bands since I was fifteen years old. I remember talking to those guys when I was a nobody, not in a band or anything. I talked to Tom and Jim for about an hour, and they were genuinely nice guys, knowing I was just a young fan. Here I am now, playing the same line-up as them, and it’s just crazy. Absolutely crazy.”

We wrap things up before catching pneumonia from the cold London air, but not before Doug tells me how much he appreciates taking time out to talk to him. That’s the greatest thing about this guy. You can tell he is utterly thankful for everyone who buys The Sleeping‘s record, comes to their shows, or even just takes the time out to chat to him and his bandmates. There’s no doubt that he’s a thoroughly good-mannered man from New York who is on the brink of achieving everything he has dreamed of. And he bloody deserves it too.
