Flaunt, Playboy Manbaby, Squarecrow, Se Vende @ Tower Bar, San Diego

The occasion was the birthday celebration of local drummer Uriel Montes. Uriel plays in two bands, Ash Williams and Le Saboteur. But neither band played this night, because it was Uriel’s turn to party. Instead, he asked his friends to play. Flaunt is a relatively new band in the San Diego scene, and they take their hardcore glam-punk seriously. Well, semi-seriously. Traveling all the way from Phoenix, Arizona were the peerless Playboy Manbaby. Locals Squarecrow and Se Vende opened the night. More people than normal squeezed into the tiny dive that is Tower Bar, and when it was all over, everyone had a sweaty good time. And Uriel was a year older.

Awesome Fest 11 Sunday @ The Office, Bar Pink, Soda Bar, & Space Bar, San Diego

The final day of Awesome Fest 11 arrived with afternoon shows, once again. Iron Chic filled The Office to capacity, so there was no getting in after seeing Tiltwheel’s set over at Bar Pink.

The Sunday night shows at Awesome Fest are always bittersweet. Some of the best sets happen Sunday night, but also it’s time to say good-bye to many friends for yet another year. Often people who have flown in for the weekend have early flights home and start disappearing throughout the evening. But those who made it through to the end were rewarded with an amazing set from veterans Samiam.
