Pentimento release video for ‘Sink or Swim’

Buffalo, NY band Pentimento have released a new video for ‘Sink or Swim’ at CLRVYNT.

The video features footage from a show the anthemic punks played in their home town last spring. The track itself is taken from their second album, ‘I, No Longer’, which was released last year on Bad Timing Records.

Buffalo, New York’s Pentimento are the quieter, more subdued side of punk rock. With throwbacks in their music to the emo scene of the ‘90s, their second full-length, ‘I, No Longer’ is 12 tracks of beautifully crafted, honest punk goodness.

From the opening chords of ‘Small Talk for Strangers’, you get a real sense of scale in Pentimento’s music. As soft as it is huge, it has all the redeeming qualities of Jimmy Eat World, with the modern feel of bands like Modern Baseball and notably, Real Friends. Tracks like ‘My Solution Is in the Lake’, ‘Sink or Swim’ and ‘Stuck Forever’ are stand out examples of the maturity and growth that Pentimento have gone through since the release of their debut.

Through international touring, live sessions, and more time spent in the studio, ‘I, No Longer’ feels more like the work of seasoned, experienced musicians – brimming with confidence, making the music that they want to make, and challenging the boundaries of the genre they are labelled into.

“But soon enough, I’ll grow into a body that you have never touched. You’ll shed your skin between the sheets where you’re making memories without me.”, Jeramiah Pauly croons over ‘Stuck Forever’, with its jangly guitars and monster of a chorus, demonstrating a Wonder Years-esque lyrical prowess.

Yet for every sombre track, there’s a really rising, anthemic track, like that of ‘Slow but Sure’ – packed with subtle harmonies, big melodies, and a bounce that you can’t help but dance to. The success of ‘I, No Longer’ is the yin and yang – the slow, mellow tracks to the dance along numbers.

A good record is a collection of great songs, a great record tells a story, and a brilliant record takes you on a journey – filled with emotional escapism. On ‘I, No Longer’, Pentimento achieve just that. Stunning, calm, heartbreaking and uplifting, it is a triumph and a joy to listen to.

Pentimento release video for ‘My Solution Is In The Lake’

Taken from this year’s ‘I, No Longer’ full-length, Pentimento have revealed the official video for ‘My Solution Is In The Lake’.

“We tried to show with this video the things that a person might hold on to when they’re at a breaking point – and how special those things are even in their regularity,” says drummer Mike Hansen. “The tiny reminders of how many great things actually exist. The golden yet nonspecific moments that we replay in our head for seemingly no reason at all. These memories we carry with us without truly knowing why – well maybe they do have a purpose. Maybe they hold us up when we don’t even know we need it.”

Pentimento Stream Final B-Side from Self-Titled LP

Pentimento announce physical release of self titled record

Pentimento have announced that they will release their self titled record on physical formats through a variety of labels worldwide.

The flood of support we received following the announcement to give the record away for free in November was nothing short of moving to all four of us, and I couldn’t even begin to imagine a way to explain how grateful we are and always will be. Pentimento release new album for free

NY’s Pentimento have released their new, self-titled album for free download. It was originally announced for today for release date through Paper + Plastick Records and Black Numbers.

“Finally, the day is here! A few weeks back, we announced we would be releasing our debut, self-titled full-length record via Paper + Plastick Records and Black Numbers, and we were more than ecstatic to have the opportunity to work with a team of outstanding individuals with their minds and hearts in the music. However, we are displeased to announce that this will not be happening.

We feel that it is only fair to be honest about the situation and lay it straight out for you to understand. Honesty, truth, integrity, sincerity … these are all things that are not as plentiful in the world as they should be. Pentimento as a band and as individuals are on a collective journey to find more of these things in the world and within ourselves. We are not perfect. We are not meant to be. We are learning from our mistakes everyday and it is so exhilarating to do so and to realize that this exact process is what life is all about.

Panic Records has hired a lawyer to threaten legal action toward Pentimento, Paper + Plastick and Black Numbers if we continue on with our record release. That’s why this album hasn’t had a normal marketing plan around it – that’s why you guys haven’t been able to preorder the record online. No vinyl or CDs or cassettes have been pressed. Plainly and simply, we’ve decided to close our relationships with P+P/BN at the current time in the interest of protecting those labels from legal action, and in the interest of forging on ourselves as an independent band. Panic Records has made threats to file take-down claims from any digital distributor selling our album. They’ve enforced take-down claims with YouTube regarding the few songs we have already released for you guys to hear, which due to the situation are no longer available. Truth be told, we have been in this legal battle with Panic since September. And even though we had to put off the relationships we were so excited to start only a couple months ago, we MUST push on as a band.

That’s why we’re giving you guys our debut full-length record for free. Starting today. We believe in this record. As four individuals, there is nothing more that we want than to be playing these songs around the world. This is the reason why we must release the record independently. We feel it is completely necessary for us to tell this story and to offer you the record that we are so very proud of. Starting today, and for as long as we possibly can before a lawyer comes for us and tries to shut us down, you’ll be able to download our new LP for free. It should be clear that our intent is not to defame anyone in this matter. Our intent is to explain the honest story of where Pentimento is forced to stand today with the continued support of Jay Zubricky and GCR Audio.

The economics of being in a band have inevitably left us with a bill to cover the expenses of the record ourselves. This is where the “sob story” begins and ends, and again, please understand that our intent is not to give you a sob story. Our intent is to give you our record.

If you open a pizza shop, you need ovens and ingredients and workers before you can even get a single pie out to your customers. All of those things cost money. Being in a band is no different. The economics of releasing an album include recording studio costs, artwork, publicity, etc. Now that we are without label support, these expenses are in the hands of Pentimento, which like many other touring acts, spends less time at work and more time in the van.

We NEED you to hear this record. Therefore, we are giving it to you for free. We will assume the expenses ourselves. If you would like to donate to the economics of the four of us continuing on as Pentimento, information can be found at the end of this message.

“You can believe the spin of Pentimento if you’d like. The band is always the victim in every situation when it comes to band/label disputes and if you side with them and call fowl on Panic Records, that’s your choice. Remember there are two sides to every story. I honestly do not care. Pentimento signed a contract and were happy with Panic Records on up until they were offered a deal from another label in which I tried to negotiate the end to their contract so that all parties would be satisfied. Pentimento are the ones that introduced their lawyer into the dealings and I responded with a lawyer as well.”

This week marks the first week that we’ve shifted out Records Out This Week into Radar rather than news, and there’s some rather excellent things out to coincide. Not the BIGGEST week for releases of the year, but a few to consider!

LIVE: Pentimento – Cambridge Corner House

OUR TIME DOWN HERE

Cambridge is hit-and-miss when it comes to gig turnouts, but due to the varied five-band bill, The Corner House was full – quite the feat on a Wednesday night.

This could possibly have been down to openers, FIRST BREATH, as it was only their first or second gig and it was obvious a lot of friends were in tow. They played no frills hardcore with the odd southern lick and hints of SICK OF IT ALL, although overall they sounded more like TERROR than the Koller brothers. Their duel vocals seemed pretty pointless, but for a band with so few gigs under their belt, there was plenty of potential.

Next up was something completely different. In fact, BOUQUET had a range of influences meaning each song was unique – a mixture of atmospheric post rock and mathy emo. The songs were long and intricate, but not unnecessarily so. Their lead vocals weren’t particularly inspiring, but due to the abilities of the musicians, it wasn’t much of a problem at all.

OUR TIME DOWN HERE are a band we’ve followed for a number of years now – progressing along the Yemin-scale from a COMEBACK KID/PAINT IT BLACK-style band to adopting a more KID DYNAMITE/LIFETIME sound with plenty of sing-a-long moments. Whatever music they’re playing though, it’s always passionate and powerful. Will’s a great frontman, and helps transfer the energy from the band into the crowd. The new songs have some really dark undertones, and with a real AFI influence to a few of them it works really well.

Up next was the surprise of the evening in the form of tour support, LIGHT YEARS. Their bouncy brand of positive pop punk was certainly nothing new, but it was a lot of fun, and the surprise of the evening.

PENTIMENTO had a lot to live up after a strong set of supports, but they did so with ease. The band treated the crowd to all but one song off their Wrecked EP, barely putting a note wrong. Their sound is relatively unique in a genre which is often feels overrun with bands. For those who aren’t familiar with them, if BALANCE AND COMPOSURE did nothing but listen to BRAND NEW‘s first two full lengths before recording, it might have sounded something like PENTIMENTO. The only gripe would be that they didn’t play ‘Isn’t It Obvious?’, but apart from that, an excellent set from a promising young band.
