Whilst entering the intimate Masque there’s a good crowd already populating the venue, meaning PEGASUS BRIDGE at least have a decent audience to play to. They’ve built up a decent reputation as a live band over the last 12 months and the Manchester band play a strong eight song set that incorporates some familiar favourites along with new track ‘Heartstrings’ with much of it impressing. The title track of the debut album ‘While We’re Young’ and latest single ‘Like Dogs’ start things off and gets the crowd going. The vocals really pierce through the crowd. These are matched with some infectious hooks and decent lyrics that set the night off to an excellent start. [4/5]

Following an impressive start to the evening LOWER THAN ATLANTIS hit the stage as the main support. Given their more aggressive sound LTA offer something completely different musically than both other bands tonight. This results in a poor crowd reaction which clearly gets to the band who don’t hide their frustration. This at times unfortunately spoils the performance which in parts is excellent. Mike Duce is a terrific front man and is well supported by the rest of the band, but the energy from Duce is particularly relentless. Even though the crowd don’t appear to be with them they still seem to have them in the palm of their hands. It’s been a while since Punktastic has seen a band make the entire audience sit down and certainly didn’t expect to see a circle pit large enough to rival Anti Flag. These guys clearly have what it takes to headline a venue of this size but for whatever reasons they don’t go down well this evening and unfortunately let it get to them more than they should. [3.5/5]

The night has been dragging behind schedule all night and it’s a late start by the time FUTURES arrive. With that said it’s partially understandable why the band play such a short set. Short or not though this band have grown superbly as a live band to improve significantly (again) from when they toured towards the back end of 2010. Their on stage presence is vastly improved since then and they’ve moved away from being excitable but talented kids to become a very assured and quality live band.

The set starts and finishes with the very catchy and radio friendly songs from last years EP ‘The Holiday’ and some newer songs are thrown in the middle. Of the older songs ‘Sal Paradise’ is excellent and the highlight of the night. The less well known ‘Oxygen’ though also really impresses and ‘Say My Name’ could prove to be a future fan favourite.

The buzz around these guys is significant at the moment and on tonights performance it’s all justified. Futures are surely destined for big things.

There are 7 bands on show tonight across 2 stages and so I obviously won’t be covering them all. This review will concentrate on the Moho Bar stage. Unfortunately the massive queue outside means I missed Blitz Kids tonight leaving just Francesqa, Out Of Sight and Futures on the smaller of the 2 stages.

FRANCESQA begin to a packed out room that was described by Ash (Wilkie, vocals) as being the size of a toilet and there’s no doubt it is very small! If there are100 people crammed in here I’d be surprised.

The songs off ?We Lived? get the most attention from the crowd however generally it’s a subdued audience. The energy shown by the guys is nothing short of stunning. They really play as if it’s their last show. Ash has a great presence as lead vocalist and the band are on top form. Time is short and so banter/chat is limited but they let the music do the talking. The final 2 tracks ?Crooked Little Sun?, which has some more hardcore elements to it and ?Ghosts? are the highlights, the crowd getting a little more into the latter. Overall though the crowd don’t come close to matching the level of enthusiasm of Francesqa. They are clearly enjoying themselves on stage at the moment and getting better and better.
[4/5]

OUT OF SIGHT have the unenviable task of following Francesqa and as part of their set announce that they’re taking a break shortly to write a new album. The guys to appear to have been touring a lot over the past year and I think it’s served them well. They’ve improved their live show significantly and developed a decent following. It’s a shame there aren’t many to see them tonight though, with many apparently choosing to watch Deaf Havana instead.

The core of the band’s set remains from previous occasions. It’s clear they never take themselves too seriously and this is most evident in the cover of Black Eyed Peas? ?I’ve Got A Feeling?, which also gets the greatest crowd reaction and works well for them. Sean chats a lot throughout, mainly in frustration he can’t get the crowd moving. This changes a little with their final song ?Hey! (Walk Away)? which is a good end to a good set. It will be interesting to see how the band progress from here though with their new record. It could well make or break what has been a promising period for the guys.
[3/5]

FUTURES complete the line up and do so with a lot of hype surrounding them. A recent headlining tour was a big success and you can’t move in this room as they start, with doors open so people can somehow hear these guys play. The Holiday EP dominates the 8-song set, with new single ?Oxygen? also included. I personally think this is a better performance than what I saw a few weeks ago. It feels less forced and they appear even more confident in themselves. Thinking back to Slam Dunk and how they’ve developed live is proof that touring regularly is important for a young band.

The crowd naturally take very well to the whole set, right from when the drums kick in at ?16? to the predictable ending of ?The Boy Who Cried Wolf?, which actually proves to be the weakest song tonight. ?The Summer? and ?Thank You? however are both excellent and ?Sal Paradise? continues to be my favourite.

I think it’s safe to say this is and will be the smallest gig the band have and will play for a while but I?m confident it is one everyone will savior as the hype around Futures further accelerates.
[4.5/5]

‘Local support’ Pegasus Bridge start the evening off at the early start time of 18:20. I can’t figure out if the band are nervous or what but as a band who’ve played Radio 1’s Big Weekend I’d be surprised. There’s just a lack of energy and emotion evident tonight. I expected more. It’s just not very interesting and with so many decent UK bands breaking through, it’s disappointing. Their single ?Ribena? gets the best reaction, however, like so other many Power Pop/Punk bands the slower song ?Paris? is the most disappointing. A Roadhouse crowd can sometimes be quite tough (They Sink Ships on Not Advised tour, for example) but this isn’t one of those occasions but Pegasus Bridge must do better. 2/5

The Xcerts are the main support and I think it’s a fair comment that not many of the crowd have heard them before. They have a rougher sound than that of Futures and Pegasus but they pack a big punch. Murray in particular never exudes confidence on stage but is excellent throughout. The new album gets a good showing, making up 4 of the 7 songs but there are still some familiar songs on show. ?Crisis In The Slow Lane? is the pick of the older songs and has some of the crowd singing along, whilst new single ?Young (Belane)? is the high point. They are on good form throughout despite never exuding confidence. ?I See Things Differently? predictably finishes things off, although Murray bouncing himself off the crowd as he finishes in the middle of the floor at the end is not necessarily a predictable end. It is a memorable one though. 4/5

Futures soon follow and they’ve come a long way since playing this stage back in February. It’s good to see tonight a sell out and few would have left disappointed with what they saw. Right from the opener ?16? the crowd are in full voice and Futures have them in the palm of their hands. This is an improvement to that of Slam Dunk but despite being on a major label I still think there are other UK bands better live. For example, the goading of the crowd, asking them to ‘beat London’ is over done and feels a little forced on occasions. Don’t get me wrong though this is still a good performance and with the songs at their disposal the future is very bright. We’re treated to a mixture of old and new songs, including the single ?Oxygen? which didn’t get as much crowd attention as the rest of the set but this will likely be short-lived. This included Sal Paradise which followed and was my favourite. The band appear to be enjoying themselves immensely at the moment and the Roadhouse crowd share that emotion. Never was this more apparent than with ?The Boy Who Cried Wolf? which finished off a show full of promise for the future whilst still showing there is room for improvement. 4/5
