With their debut record, Sheer Mag pick up exactly where they left off and that is by no means a bad thing. ‘Need To Feel Your Love’ is twelve songs of straight up rock ’n’ roll that will get your hips moving and feet tapping the second you hit play.

Opener ‘Meet Me In The Street’ shows just what Sheer Mag are about, a killer opening riff leading into four-to-the-floor on the kick drum that will get fists pumping and glasses raised in the air. It’s impossible to not picture yourself cruising down a motorway on a Harley Davidson surrounded by the new bike gang that you started as soon you listened to this record. ‘Need To Feel Your Love’ is the most soulful punk song you’ll ever hear, whilst the riff during the bridge on ‘Expect The Bayonet’ will make your heart burst with joy.

A downside to opening an album with four absolute bangers, though, is that what follows sometimes fails to live up to the same standard. ‘Rank and File’ and ‘Suffer Me’ don’t hit quite as hard as, say, ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’, but the album doesn’t ultimately suffer as a result. ‘Until You Find The One’ sees vocalist Christina Halliday accompanied by a sole guitar in a Fleetwood Mac-esque slow jam, whilst album closer ‘(Say Goodbye To) Sophie Scholl’ is a touching ode to one of the leaders of the anti-Nazi White Rose movement.

‘Need To Feel Your Love’ is an album of pure joy. It’s the perfect summer record and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Every few years the cycle in media seems to go: “guitar music is dead” until a band comes around and everyone goes, “actually, no, wait! Guitar music is cool again!” Sheer Mag are that band and ‘Need To Feel Your Love’ is that album. Y’know, if your one of those dummies who thinks guitar music is ever going away.

Ahead of the release of their debut full-length ‘All Day Breakfast’ on April 7th, we’re excited to share with you ‘Pinpoint’, the new track from Surf Dads. The two-piece from Regina, Saskatchewan play fast and they play loud, with obvious nods to Bully, Cloud Nothings and Weezer.

Guitarist and vocalist Gage McGuire had this to say about the track: “This was the first song we ever wrote as a band, albeit a lot different. We loved the chorus so much that we said ‘this has to be on our first full-length’ and saved it for 2 years. I wrote the lyrics to this in a car on the way to a show to play the song for the first time live. I screwed them up for sure, but the line ‘dig your own hole, I’ll pass you a shovel’ is one that has stuck out to me as one of my favourite lyrics we have penned.”

Buffalo’s Del Paxton are set for a big 2017. With their debut album ‘All Day, Every Day, All Night’ due out on 3rd March through Topshelf Records, the 90s-emo influenced trio are rightly winning plaudits throughout the music world. The band, though, are humbled by the reception and are taking it one step at a time. “We are all pretty taken aback by the response to it already,”Greg McClure (drums) muses, explaining how it feels to be working with Topshelf Records on their first full length. “If I’m being honest, it felt a little surreal! As a label that could sign and work with pretty much any amazing band in our genre, it’s a real honour that Topshelf believe in us.”

‘All Day, Every Day, All Night’ follows Del Paxton’s first EP ‘Worst. Summer. Ever’ (released 2013) and a split with Montreal’s emo-math legends, Gulfer, in 2015. “Gulfer are amazing. We met them in a basement show in Ithaca, NY for Ithaca Underground. The show was us, Gulfer, Vasudeva and Cattle Drums. It was absolute magic. Just incredible vibes and instant friendships,” McClure remembers. He is quick to lavish praise on those Del Paxton surround themselves with, specifically their producer, Jay Zubricky. “We recorded this record with our good friend Jay at GCR studios here in Buffalo, NY. He was a pretty easy choice for us to make. Not only is he a great person and talented engineer, but we could talk about obscure 90s-00s bands with him all day,” he laughs.

There is a comfort, an ease, a confidence to Del Paxton throughout our conversation. There’s a real sense of self-assurance which can only come from a band that has worked tirelessly together since their inception. “The three of us got together for the first time in the winter of 2013 and we’ve been at it ever since. I think we’ve gotten pretty comfortable with one another in the way we approach the songwriting process. We each have our roles that we kind of fall into,” Zack Schoedel (bass/vocals) explains. “I think our best songs are the ones that seem to materialize naturally, as if they write themselves without us consciously manipulating them too much.”

With guitarist/vocalist Dylan England making the album’s cover art, Del Paxton are very much involved in every aspect of their band. However, England is quick to assert that he feels blessed with the opportunity to be involved so directly. “I did make the collage for the record cover, but not because I felt entitled for an opportunity or anything. Control is important to me in my visual art but in Del Paxton I’m only one part of the creative process. We make all of our band related decisions together, and I’m just lucky that Greg and Zack support my art,” he explains.

‘All Day, Every Day, All Night’ is the band’s first full-length, and Del Paxton have strong feelings regarding music consumption and the way music is distributed in the digital age. “I think all three of us look back with a particular fondness on the reign of the full length album as the primary medium”, Schoedel explains. “The LP prioritizes close attention, engagement and patience, and generally speaking, it feels as though these principles are becoming less and less important in today’s culture of music consumption. For me, it’s kind of tragic.” Their new record, though, demands attention

With the album release fast approaching, as well as plans to tour throughout the year, Del Paxton are bracing themselves for what could be the biggest year of their career. McClure acknowledges that “it’s an opportunity that we do not take for granted” and 2017 is sure to be the year Del Paxton is the name on everyone’s lips.

We’re big fans of Sweden’s emo legends I Love Your Lifestyle over here at Punktastic, and we’re super excited to share the first play of their latest single, ‘Fire’.

Appearing on a double A-side single released through Dog Knights Productions, ‘Fire’ is yet another epic, shimmering, energetic emo banger from the 5-piece from Malmö/Gothenburg. Fans of Algernon Cadwallader and Snowing will find plenty to love about this track, while the soaring riffs and pounding drums and bass are enough to make you forget about this winter weather and look forward to summer.

Following last year’s debut album ‘We Go Way Back’, ‘Touch/Fire’ will come as a welcome surprise to I Love Your Lifestyle fans. Bassist Jonathan Bjurbo said: “After our European tour in September, we have been taking things really slow. We have been focusing more on work and school (the boring stuff) and Lukas (vocals/guitar) is studying at acting school now, so the only time we have to play shows and rehearse is on the weekends. As an “emo” band in Sweden, though, you don’t get any shows anyway haha. We have just started to practice new songs and hopefully we can start recording soon, but I think we will tour this summer – it’s simply way too fun to tour”!”

Keep your eyes peeled for more from I Love Your Lifestyle later in the year, but for now check out ‘Fire’ below. You won’t regret it.

I Love Your Lifestyle will release ‘Touch/Fire’ on a limited pressing through Dog Knights Productions on March 17th. The first pressing is limited to 600 copies on ultra-clear vinyl with three different screen-printed B-side images. You can pre-order the double A-side single here.

Playing loud, noisy emo through the most extravagant pedal boards you’ve seen in your life, Lingua Nada are a chaotic, energetic blend of genres from shoegaze to screamo, posthardcore to pop. Paan are described as “one of those screamo bands called a screamo band because no one knew what label to give them”, along with “detailed chaos”. We think that’s pretty fitting.

Featuring five songs from Lingua Nada and three from Paan, the split LP (limited to 400 copies) will be available from the 17th March on German labels Kapitän Platte and Lala Schallplatten.
