First off a big thank you must go to the Rotheram guys for actually making the effort to trek to such foreign lands as Lincolnshire. It is oh so rare we ever get a band of any caliber visiting, so for the Yorkshire four piece to pay us a visit along with Aura-Sun, Tribute to Nothing and local boys The Elusive Mr Hunt you felt somewhat appeased by it all. Predictably though things took a turn for the worse when a problem arose. There was nobody here. Not even the Kerrang logo which was tacked on the flyers could bring more bodies to the tight upstairs of ‘the duke’. Although a little more maybe could have been done to spread the word of the gig, well done to the promoters for making the effort.
The gig started with local retro trio THE ELUSIVE MR HUNT playing a tight set, which seemed to wake the crowd up… could have been the lead singer blue leopard skin top though. You just don’t know. (7)
AURA SUN suffered a similar fate to there pre-dessors and struggled to make any impact on the crowd who were still filtering through. (7)
TRIBUTE TO NOTHING followed it up with their lead singer showing a huge stage presence as they thrashed around the tight stage with confidence. Also signed to Lockjaw records they are now in their tenth year in the business and still show a whole lot of enthusiasm which has served them well through their decade of noise. They played a strong six song set including five songs off there latest release 'Act Without Words'. The punk/metal/hardcore quartet tried there best to get the small crowd into it with little avail but kudos to them for trying. Solid performance by a band with a strong history behind them. (8)
Headliners THISGIRL staggered on stage at around 11.30pm much to the pleasure of the crowd who scowered around the front of the tiny stage to witness baby faced frontman Liam pounce about in his usual energetic passion. A seven song set laid place to a couple of newer songs and many an old favourate. Highlights included a stirring version of 'Things we can do with baloon holders' 'T is for tup tup' and 'Three minute Spanish film' You certainly can't accuse them of having mundane song names. Having seen the young Rotheram crew twice now its obvious to see no shortage of enthusiasm no matter the venue. Playing in a packed tent at the Leeds festival opened up a whole set of new fans for them, and although their performance in Lincoln wasn't a patch on there festival debut it still delivered the goods. (8) Since this gig I hear that bass player Matt has unfortunatly dislocated a knee but is soldiering on... eye of the tiger and all that. Get well soon!
And so ended a night of top notch punk rock action. As said before it's always a god send when bands flock to Lincoln, so a big thanks must go out to all the bands who made the effort tonight! Well done gents!
