If there’s one thing I love, it’s a song written by Jaime Macefield – A Is For…, The Remarkable Rocket, and TANAOU have filled my life with joy for a while now – so if there’s one thing I’m not going to miss, it’s the chance to see TANAOU in their hometown, for fun and whatnot.
The 3 hour drive down (brilliant – rush hour!) might have been a kick in the teeth to some, but my friend Lau saw it as a fun road trip, so we decided to head along any way! Toilet stops, Burger King, and a few numb arses later, we’re enjoying our first drink at The New Roadmender.
It’s quite a nice place – and tonight there are ‘BBC Electric Proms 2006’ banners everywhere, with local miscreants about the place, obviously waiting for exactly what we are.
Unfortunately, due to preferring the banter, tonight’s support (
ENID BLITZ and
JONT ) take a back burner, and by the time 9.45 arrives, we’re eagerly anticipating
THE ALL NEW ADVENTURES OF US.
From the second that the magnificent seven bumble about nervously on to the stage to ending notes in encore ‘Time For a Change’, it’s pretty obvious that given the correct backing, TANAOU could easily follow in the steps of long time friend Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly!, and set the UK, Hollyoaks, The O.C. and Peter Schmeichel on fire. Highlights for me include the debut of the full band version of ’45 Forever’ (a song which has personally helped me a lot over the last few weeks), and a delicate rendition of ‘Perfectly Imperfect’, but it’s very hard to pick and choose highlights when TANAOU are so constantly brilliant.
The Zs on the back drop, more Zs being projected around the room, sharing intervals with 7” adapters and ‘The All New Adventures of Us’ across the back drop, add to the ambience of the environment, and the choir and orchestra add further depth where you didn’t think possible.
As I stated – TANAOU can easily break the barrier down and reach mainstream success, and with the backing of the BBC, and Radio 1 recently, the sky seems to have set no upper bound on what we can expect from the Adventurers in the coming year. (10)
