Underoath, London Camden Underworld

*This gig was at the garage*

Apparently the Garage was oversold by 125 people tonight and it doesn’t surprise me. It bothers me slightly that this many people want to see these bands that have nearly all burst onto the ‘scene’ this year, but surprise me, no – I guess everyone loves a good fad.

DOPAMINE opened up the night and I arrived mid way through their set. I could have sworn that I’ve seen this band and that they were good. But they just seemed to play boring music and sing in American accents. Usually I’m the last person in the world to jump on the ‘Ohmygod, they’re singing in American accents’ bandwagon, but this band didn’t sound English, or Welsh, or Scottish. And Ireland doesn’t count.

ROSES ARE RED take to the stage and in usual Trustkill style were awful. They played a horrible mix of faux-metal and pop punk all merged together, the end result of which wasn’t pretty. They played in time, and they could play their instruments, but that was about as far as it went. Everything they did was so tiresome. However much they swung their guitars or jumped about couldn’t disguise the fact that they were playing such sub-standard rubbish. As they churned out tedious song after uninteresting song I headed to the bar. (1.5/10)

SILVERSTEIN take to the stage fronted by Shane Told, a man who could easily pull off being a Henry Rollins look-a-like. The band varies between dull and average. Sometimes achieving hooks and riffs that had my feet tapping, but the most part SILVERSTEIN had me standing pretty still. There was simply nothing about them that grabbed my attention through the screams and melodies there was nothing special, don’t get me wrong the band can perform, it’s just the produce of the bands performance isn’t anything much to talk about. (5/10)

Three down and only two more to go is a good way of describing how I felt as THE HURT PROCESS trundle onstage. Apparently I’m meant to watch every band with an open mind and I thought this was almost impossible for a band like THE HURT PROCESS but I was slightly surprised. It seems that their constant touring with some pretty big acts has done them the world of good. Now I wouldn’t go as far as to say they’re one of the better British bands around at the moment– far, far from it. But they’re no longer the out of time mess that they were six months ago. If you try and ignore the shocking, shocking drumming they don’t sound too bad. THE HURT PROCESS don’t really play music that I would voluntarily listen in my free time, but I can appreciate, perhaps, why people would. (5.5/10)

It seems as everyone is here to see UNDEROATH tonight, as the Tampa Bay six-piece position themselves around the stage. They strike their instruments like matches, and the room explodes. It’s an awesome sight to see bands laying into their instruments so violently and I’m sure the crowd appreciate this as much as I do. Kids flying this way and that, stage diving and grabbing the mic. There’s fuck all original about what UNDEROATH are doing, but to an extent it doesn’t matter, because they’re so entertaining to watch. I’m always unsure of a bands aim when playing live. Is it their job to simply replay their recorded songs in front of you as well as they can? Or is it to provide the most entertaining performance as possible. Personally, I would like to think it’s somewhere in the middle and I think UNDEROATH are close to that tonight. They are by no means perfect, but they certainly provided me with entertaining performance with a little help from the crowd – and at the least UNDEROATH made me feel as though I hadn’t made a completely wasted journey. (8/10)
