Hundred Reasons, Leeds Cockpit
Is it me or are gigs at this venue getting earlier and earlier. Tonight I made my way down to the show knowing 4 bands were playing. I had the job of reviewing at least 3, but would have been happy to do all 4 as it is a joint tour. I got inside at 7.45 only to find out I had missed 2 of the bands already. What?? What time did this night kick off? So I’d like to start this review by apologising, I missed Two Fold. I heard they were good, but I’m not going to pretend I saw them and lie, make up some jargon about catching “only a tiny bit of their set etc..” just to make my review look better.
Note to Self: Get to Cockpit earlier than I used to do.
So around 8pm REUBEN take to the stage, a band I had briefly encountered before on a headline tour with The Holiday Plan. They hadn’t done much to warrant a major thumbs up back then, but tonight I was really REALLY impressed. Someone will probably piss through my letter box for saying this, but there are hints of INME and Biffy Clyro within their sound especially as they manage to generate a considerable amount of power and energy for a three – piece. They have a huge amount of confidence which is also important, especially as this is not arrogant or in your face. Various tours like this will slowly move Reuben into a stable position on the U.K punk rock scene. Their roughed up and energetic sound is bound to take them far. (8)
Then at 9pm, (headline band on a Friday night, 9pm??) HUNDRED REASONS get the packed out Cockpit’s attention by launching into an onslaught of familiar material and a number of new songs which don’t differ greatly from the best tracks on “Ideas Above Our Station.” I guess this tour, and the next few months in Hundred Reasons career is a big test to show the band have not lost any character after been dropped by some idiots at Sony, and basically gives them the chance to turn around and shove the middle finger right in their faces (and I’m sure they’d love to show off the sales figures for their new album also.) Within a few songs the band are dripping with sweat from the energy produced by themselves and this massive Leeds crowd, who are absorbing every song like Kleenex kitchen roll. The atmosphere inside tonight proves that this band still have what it takes to be one of the best British rock bands there is today. (9)
