Million Dead, Leeds Cockpit

Tonight’s gig at The Cockpit began in bizarre circumstances when the queue of punters was entertained by a young band playing on the back of a van that pulled up road-side. As people danced (and nearly got knocked down by speeding Leeds traffic) and applauded, local restaurant staff approached the band to get them to move on, unfortunately that wasn’t the point, and by annoying locals, the band were growing in popularity by the minute. Although I didn’t 100% catch their name, I believe it was Sugarcane, and they hailed from Scunthorpe. They were finally moved on by security, but received a huge cheer from the entertained fans, just for the show.

Meanwhile, inside the venue, local band, COLOUR OF FIRE kicked things off with the glamour and pace of punk rock. A very lively quartet, who soon got the crowd warmed up with Muse-esq. riffs and screechy vocals. If there is one thing I like in a band, it’s an interesting front man, and Colour of Fire have just that. A true entertainer, who worked the crowd not only with his voice and speaking, but his physical actions too. (7.5)

Up next were MILLION DEAD. New guitarist Tom seems to have taken the role in his stride, playing with extreme confidence and offering more movement than old flame Cameron to compliment the rest of the band. Tonight Million Dead are out, probably on their last tour of the year, before working on the new album, and they are as lively and passionate ever. The experience of being on the road is certainly showing and some of their better songs, “Smiling at Strangers on Trains,” “I Am the Party,” and “Pornography for Cowards” are fantastic, showing how much potential there is in this band and how good their next record can be. (8.5)

As this was an early gig, 9.15 saw the entrance of SPARTA. I only watched a few of this groups songs, mainly because I hadn’t any intention of seeing them, but also because what I did see, didn’t impress me. The band didn’t come across as being very lively or passionate about what they were doing, and at times reminded me of an 80’s metal band, very slow and drawn out, which wasn’t very entertaining to me at all, especially coming of the back of the previous 2 bands. What I’ve heard from this band on recording had been quite promising, but tonight, they didn’t seem up with the show at all. (4)
