Stressed Vol 2, Various Artists
I like to think I keep my ear to the ground and I know who's who in the UK scene - I'm no oracle, not by any means, but I'm always surprised if there's a good band knocking about and I've at least not heard the name. Stressed Records' second compilation throws up 23 songs where I've only ever heard of three of the bands before, putting my claim to shame. Well almost - I did say I knew about good bands. In my opinion the 20 acts I'd previously not heard are far from good. Well, some of them are pretty shoddy anyway.
The first two tracks on this compilation don't really make any kind of impression at all, so it's a good job the triple salvo of Plans and Apologies, Dragonflies Draw Flame and Escobar drag the score up. In Flight Program impress too, while Hanzo Steel are hotter and heavier than a blast furnace. The Atoms are pretty horrible, The Swarm an acquired taste and Skull Tanker something I wouldn't personally listen to given half the chance. This record is a real mixed bag with something for everyone. I'm a big fan of samplers, especially from small indie labels, so I'd recommend everyone picks this up cheap. But don't expect 23 quality tracks...
