Taste of Christmas, Various Artists
Some things are just plain old bad ideas. 'Taste of Christmas' is one of those boardroom ideas that should have been left on the table. While there are a few moments here which are pretty good, on the whole this is a joke - and nota funny one. For those who haven't grasped the concept, this is a special Christmas themed CD with bands such as Funeral For A Friend and The Used writing their own festive-fueled anthems or covering well known classics. And while some are pulled off with vigour, some surely break human rights and decency laws.
The covers aren't all that bad - Street Drum Corps featuring Bert McCracken pull off a faithfull 'Happy Christmas (War Is Over)', while Skindred's 'Jingle Bells' is a brilliant ragga-rock version which stands out like a sore thumb amongst some absolute garbage. Roses Are Red's 'Last Christmas'...well, it's not bad, it's just a bit dull, is another that will have you singing along even if you don't want to. However, there is plenty of said garbage within the confines of this shiny disc. FFAF's 'Miracle of Christmas' is sappy and destined for airplay on The OC, while Opiate For The Masses also disappoint.
There are a few real stinkers here. My American Heart are so soppy they'll drown in the puddles from their own tears, Like Yesterday more wishy-washy than anything I've possibly ever heard and BedLight For BlueEyes are drowned by an over enthusiastic vocalist who wants to be Bon Jovi. And don't get me started on the overdubbed talking at the end... Emery and Gatsbys American Dream pull back about half a star, but by this time I've really lost faith in Christmas. Bah Humbug.
