That Darn Punk OST, Various Artists
I will start this review by saying that I haven't in fact seen the Kung Fu movie; as such, this review is based only on the quality of the tracks on the CD (which is probably a good thing.) Interspersed throughout the CD are short audio samples from the film, which may or may not hold comedy/sentimental value depending on whether you liked the film or not.
The CD kicks off with the Nerf Herder track 'Siegfried & Roy', 2 minutes and 37 seconds of pure unadulterated crap. If I wanted to listen a lyrical set composed of 10 words or less I'd check out the garage section in my nearest record store.
Thankfully, straight after is Bigwig's excellent 'Still' from 'Stay Asleep', which is undoubtedly one of their best tracks and redeems the CD no end. Things start looking up when Lagwagon's song is not only of high quality, but also features a lift music stylee interlude which adds novelty no end. Pennywise's 'Alien' is also an undisputed classic, and The Atari's 'Ben Lee' gives me the inkling that Kris Roe is less than impressed with Mr Lee, and has a hell of a lot of ferocity for an accoustic song.
No Motiv's track, 'Only you' is also worth a listen, as is MI6, along with Rancid and Swingin' Utters; not so good tracks include Sloppy Seconds, and The Vandals' 'My Heart Will Go on' - New Found Glory have covered this particular song by the ballad queen (tm) and have done it much better. I also would have expected the Vandals to have found someone with clearer vocals than Katalina.
A mixed bag is the order of the day here; if you really couldn't get enough of the film then get this, you'll probably like it. Although it has got a few good tracks, we've seen too many of them before; if you saw the movie out of the blue, and this is your first outing into the world of punk however, then you could do a lot, lot worse.
