Home Is Where You Make It EP, They Sink Ships
imageI've followed They Sink Ships progress for quite a while now as they've developed from a young, inexperienced band trying to find their sound into a band with a record deal pushing their first 'proper' release. This three track EP was recorded with Matty O'Grady and sounds heavily influenced by You Me At 6 - I'm not sure, given the fact the producer record YMA6's first album, whether this is a coincidence or not. Either way, it gives the band a current, solid sound and that's no bad thing. Whether the world needs another band that sounds like YMA6 is another thing, but as a reviewer you can only comment on what is put in front of you and this is a pretty good introduction to the band.

A theme which continues throughout is a strong lead vocal, definitely best used on 'Tired Eyes' which also features a crunchy guitar riff and a catchy vocal melody. It's the song I'd recommend you check out first. 'The King and His Crown' is another good effort, very catchy with a decent hook. The same can be said about the title track. It shows the band, on the basis of three tracks anyway, have the ability to write a tune. If they can sustain it over the course of 6 or 8 tracks, or maybe even longer, there's no reason they couldn't replicate the success of their peers. All the band can do is take these songs on the road and put in the hard yards. The 'kids' should soon make them their favourite new band if they do that.
