The EP, Toy
Post-hardcore is definitely all the rage at the moment and another young band off of the punk rock conveyor belt is Toy, a four piece from that musical hotbed known as Falkirk. But where too many bands wear their collective influences on their sleeve, Toy rock out in a reasonably unique fashion to create a four track EP which is a good listen.

The band state the likes of Hatebreed, Further Seems Forever and Quicksand among their influences, and bits can be drawn from these bands. There are enough melodies to sit nicely next to the crunchier bits and the backing vocals sound great combined with some buzzing guitars. Opener 'From You To Me' sounds like a more psychotic Jerry-Built but without the synth, featuring lots of driving guitars and soaring melodies. If you're a fan of JB, you'll almost certainly enjoy Toy, despite the fact the bands are instrically different. 'A Foetal Position' is harder and darker, with singer Gavin pushing his vocals to the limit with some piercing screams which again fit well round the singing parts. There is a small element of the Deftones here too, with the subtleties captured quite well.

'Square Pegs For Round Holes' is poppier, more at the Further Seems Forever end of the post-hardcore scale. The tinny production actually works in the bands favour, creating a robust effect which twists and turns rather than loses itself in its own polish and sheen. The drums are a standout throughout and the guitar work is inventive at times, as well as forceful when necessary. Finale 'Like We Did Before' starts off even more melodic, quiet even, before the inevitable wall of guitars starts. Gavin's vocals again push everything forward, finishing off an impressive EP. If they can pull this off live as well then Toy could well be one of 2003's brightest hopes.

Having already rocked out with the likes of Vacant Stare, Capdown, Douglas and Raging Speedhorn, Toy have a bright future ahead of them. Fusing a lot of different bands into their own melting pot certainly works on this EP and with extensive tours set for this year, Toy are a band to kep an eye on.
