The Itchy Tits All Girl Punk Show,
Itchy TitsEvery now and then a CD arrives at Punktastic that redefines genres, pushes boundaries and generally smashes the fuck out of all preconceptions. Trouble is, this isn't it. This 3-track EP seems to be a bit of a double edged sword, since it shows that they can play but the lyrics and music itself are so derivative that it's somewhat frustrating.
Opener, 'Punk 'em' credits "divine inspiration from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers" and it is hip-hop-punk by numbers with an unimaginative riff and lyrics that seem to have been scrawled on the back of a pencil case during an extreme bout of boredom. This song could have been really impressive since the bassline is pretty funky but the vocals grate and the guitar line is repeated so many times that you really want to cut your ears off.
This is followed up by 'Martin' which starts off very well indeed. A smooth bassline shadowed by a calming guitar riff but it degenerates into a mess. It's frustrating - so much more could have been made with a crashing chorus but it all seems far too droney. Potential unrealised.
Final track, the title track starts off a bit sleaze rock, a bit NOFX - very promising. The lyrics seem to be once again pandering to all the stereotypes of grrl punk without any attempt to be original or exciting, and could have been so much more. This is the general theme of the EP - could do better. This is a young band with a lot of potential and this isn't actually that bad after repeated listening. I'd want to hear some more before passing a further judgement since I do believe that with a bit more work, they could be very impressive indeed.
