When the first three acts that a band cites as influences on their press release are Biffy Clyro, Yourcodenameis:Milo and Jetplane Landing, it's quite likely that even before listening to the record, you're expecting a wave of aural confusion, uncomfortable time signatures and downright awkward music. Brighton's Stealbackyourlife fare well to respect their influences then, being every bit as unconventional as their idols.

Their debut 5-track E.P. opens with 'Mary Got Stung', a supercharged piece of rock modernity that winds and turns its way through elements of beauty and complete anarchy. Vocalist Si has a very malleable voice, which at times is reminiscent of Reuben's Jamie Lenman and overall acts as a fitting centrepiece for the band's sound. 'Ruin' is a bit of a downturn in terms of quality on offer here, with a nauseatingly simple verse that doesn't hold its weight against the other four pieces. However what it does highlight is that SBYL's drummer Chris is undeniably talented at his instrument, both when it comes to the conventional, and the less straightforward rhythms.

Stealbackyourlife are fun and full of energy. With a sound that lends more to mathematics than it does to traditional rock music, it's unlikely to be everybody's cup of tea, but if you're interested in something a tad bit edgy and awkward, then they're worth at least a quick look in.
