There's a distinct Weakerthans-esque indie rock vibe to 'Citizen'. Released on Doghouse, which has also been involved with The Get Up Kids, Say Anything and All American Rejects, you'd expect this to come up with the goods because of the illustrious company the band join. And for the most part Army of Me manage to hit the right notes - opening song 'Perfect' sums things up quite nicely with soaring vocal harmonies and hooky choruses. It's just...well, 'Citizen' doesn't quite get to where it should be. And when you consider Doghouse's alumni are almost second to none, this record doesn't quite match up.
'Going Through Changes' has a snappy chorus but lacks punch in the verses, the stomping 'Meet You At The Mouth' again lacks the killer touch, while 'How Long' again needs a certain something to take it to the level the band hint at on songs like 'Walking On' and 'Rise'. In terms of melodic rock bands, Army of Me are perfectly good and 'Citizen' is a good record - but it lacks something which would make it a great record. If you like We Are Scientists, but want something a little less quirky, then check this band out.
