With A Brick,
Ironbound NYCSo we’ve got some NYC hardcore credentials here, with Sick of it All chaps, Killing Time fellas and some other.. Err.. Blokes. From bands. Lo and behold, we get some NYCHXCCORRRRE by the numbers. It’s angry, aggressive and pretty much brain dead, with some lyrics bordering on genius thanks to their sheer knuckle-dragging stupidity. “Hit you in the face with a fucking brick”, indeed.
These boys are from another time – one when it wasn’t incredibly safe to walk the streets of New York and when CBGB’s wasn’t a T-shirt factory – and they seem to be stuck in this era for some reason, pushing exactly the same message as every other New York hardcore band has done for all eternity. Frankly it’s dull. And doesn’t appeal in the slightest. I’d even go so far as to say it’s damn boring – whilst the pace does pick up here and there through the record, mostly it’s a laboured, geriatric tempo with a fat-sounding angry man spewing profanities and nuggets of street survival wisdom.
I realise this is going to get me kicked in by some fat tattooed men who refuse to acknowledge modern hardcore punk has any credibility, but this album is utterly, utterly boring. Stick with Sick of it All. They’re a hell of a lot better.
