Meet Me In St LouisI'm not 100% sure if this is the name of the EP, but the phrase (deep breath) 'and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high water mark that place where the wave finally broke and rolled back' (exhales) adorns the front page of this record. So I'm guessing that's what this is called. I first came across Meet Me In St Louis when they sent be a bio-less demo, which I rather liked. This new record, out on Function Records, is more of the same. It's very good indeed - a little abstract and drawn out, but clever, technical and absorbing all at the same time.
Oh. And pretentious. I mean with songs like 'we need to act like we don't need this shit, then they give us shit for free' you're kind of already pushing yourself into a little box. Thankfully the music MMISL write is enough to break themselves from the shackles they self-create. The aforementioned track stutters and attacks in equal measure, which drums spitting like gunfire and guitar riffs attacking from all sides. The vocals, as they are throughout, are top drawer too. Each song, while featuring similar structures, is different enough to engage interest far beyond the short-term, finishing with the very clever 'You Said Your Finger Was A Gun', which threatens to break the never-end-an-album-with-an-acoustic-song rule. In short, this is clever and captivating and it's lovely to see UK bands pushing the boundaries.
