The One Above All, The End Of All That Is, Curl Up And Die
I'm gonna keep this review nice and tight because I don't really have that much to say about it. Curl Up And Die are fast, hard and frenetic and come across as a metalcore band spazzing out as if they'd lost various limbs in a horrific blender accident. Switching from the slow and sludgey to the fast and furious, the band certainly have the power and the talent to vary their sound enough to keep it interesting. For instance, opener 'As Uncomfortable Routine' chugs along, before the explosive 'Antidepressents are depressing' flies back in your face. But for all their obvious qualities, I've found listening to, and reviewing, 'The One Above All, The End Of All That Is' a massive difficulty. For one, it's not my kind of music, but for two it's just damn inaccessible - throwing in so many styles and switches is obviously interesting, but I found it difficult to take in because this isn't a style of music I can stomach. Despite what the cute colours on the artwork may suggest, Curl Up And Die are a real behemoth of a band that excel at making noise. But it's plain and simply not my thing whatsoever - hence the 'sitting on the fence' scoreline. And I know someone will go, 'why didn't someone else review it?' but the simple fact is this is my honest opinion. If you're a fan of the metalcore genre, check this lot out and let the music do the talking.
