Random HeroesThere comes a time in the scene where a new generation of bands starts to pop-up and turn heads. I remember when No Comply and Captain Everything would often open the types of shows they’re now headlining; it’s the group of bands who are in that position now who are going to be the leaders of the pack in the not so distant future. Just from the opening few tracks on this album I can tell that Brighton’s RANDOM HEROES could have a bright future ahead of them.
I’ve had this CD in my review pile for ages but never got round to listening to it until recently which I regret. This album which I believe to be provisionally titled “Maximum Scene Points” is simply full of pop-punk gems! Not in the recently popular uber-polished, uber glossy, MTV2 generation pop-punk but what I suppose you could call classic pop-punk if you wanted to split atoms over it. Definitely more Lookout! than Drive-Thru.
The majority of tracks on here are sub two-minutes and obviously never outstay their welcome; every song is filled to the brim with sing-a-long hooks and melodies whilst musically the songs are fast and punchy – just how pop-punk should be played! Musical fads and trends come and go but classic pop-punk is a formula that I can’t get enough of when it’s done well and RH really do hit the spot with surgical precision on this release.
Granted RH aren’t quite the finished article yet and they’re not breaking any boundaries with this release, clearly that was never their intention though. If the plan was to record 12 short yet sharp, upbeat and catchy songs then the mission was easily accomplished. It’s strikingly obvious to me that RH are a name that we’ll be hearing a lot more of if this album is anything to go by.
