ChillertonWhen we last reviewed Chillerton, Ben described them as “a watered-down, cynical attempt to ride the wave,” which, as you can probably imagine went down like a lead balloon and resulted in a bunch of cry-baby ‘fans’ berating someone for having an opinion which is different to theirs. It’s something that is sadly prevalent in a music ‘scene’ where you cannot go against the grain, let alone have an opinion which differs from the ‘scene’ majority (using the word ‘scene’ in the loosest sense possible). It’s pretty sad that’s how it is nowadays, but there you go. Even though I won’t be as harsh, I’m still 99% sure a bunch of cunts will reply to this review and try pick it apart, while hiding behind a screen-name. If I could have one thing for Christmas it would be to give everyone some manners and to respect what other people think, even if you think they are wrong.
Regardless of what other reviewers here at PT think, Chillerton has done very well. Their last split with When All Else Fails was generally well received and has led to this EP, which is jointly released by Cat n Cakey and Boss Tuneage. Chillerton are part of a blooming south-coast scene and although I have read a lot about them in various zines, this is the first time I’ve actually heard any of their stuff. After re-reading Ben’s review I have to say that while I stand by his opinion (I haven’t heard the split so I cannot say if he’s right or wrong), this EP isn’t as bad as that, although some of the points he makes are relevant here.
One thing Ben did point out in his last review was that the vocals are pretty bad and at times on this EP there are definite signs the vox are not in the best of shape. While the screaming and shouting parts are passable, there are moments on ‘The Way She Types’ where the vocals are horrifically out of tune. The introduction of the female vocals certainly add a layer mind you, making the Samiam-esque guitars sound a bit calmer than they actually are. On the plus side, ‘Gregolas’ and especially ‘Torque’ are very good songs which combine driving guitars with a gruff vocal that sounds tortured – and for the most part is in tune.
Personally I prefer Jets vs Sharks, who I believe are a far better band on the basis of the two bands latest records. Chillerton are ok – I can see why a lot of people like them and I am sure they are a great live band, but on the basis of this 5-track EP only I have to say there are better bands of this ilk out there. Obviously we are missing something, but it’s just an opinion that I’m sure anyone connected with this release won’t give two shits about.
