Attain To A Calm, Fallout40
Hang on a minute...no, it can't be. Is it? Is that...have Fallout 40 turned into Metallica?! From the guitar riff that chugs through 'Hello Bastard', you could be mistaken for believing the quartet had morphed into James Hetfield and company, such is the force and sheer metal-sound that is eminating from the speakers. F40 have always been a heavy band without ever going down the hardcore route, but this takes them to new heights. Or should that be lows, such is the heavyness of the riff. If that doesn't whet your apetite for 'Attain To A Calm', then not much else will. It's a ferocious record that takes elements of a number of genres and moulds them together. Comparing Fallout 40 to other bands is near impossible; they're Fallout 40 - no more, no less, and that's possibly the best compliment I can give.

'Attain To A Calm' is a collection of six songs, and an intro, that blasts and rages through a punk rock fury. They switch from dual vocals to piercing roars, from skate punk anthems to the aforementioned metal bonanza. It's a record that finally proves how good a band they've become. 'Dark Inertia' and 'Bravestar Invasion' may not have the same Metallica-esque qualities, but still hit hard and strike fear into the bellies of those wussy emo fans that cower at the thought of an electric guitar.

They've already secured support slots with Rancid and Rufio, but 'Attain To A Calm' will not just cement a growing reputation, but propel Fallout 40 into the UK big leagues. This record is one of the best I've heard this year from a UK band - there's no pretense, no arrogance and no lack of balls; this is just a record which blasts passion from their guts from the first minute to the last.
