‘Happiness Isn’t Overrated’, the recent EP release by Seattle based duo-come-four-piece Churn, carries with it two key objectives. “We wanted to make stuff that sticks with you musically, that makes you want to sing along or dance,” says bassist Alex Pitts of the band’s seven-track release. “I want people to think about what it feels like to grow up,” adds vocalist and guitarist Catherine Fisher.

Merging the two, the raw sound – borne out of an initial bedroom project and since welcoming touring musicians TJ Main on drums and Ryan Mangione-Smith on guitar – is at once uplifting and dense. The short, sharp tracks are audibly unpolished, deliberately harking back to 90s garage-punk and the subsequent riot grrrl movement. Yet they retain that all-important danceability, be it with some heaviness on its shoulders.

“We wanted to add lively visuals to a more somber song,” the band say of the video for EP closer, ‘Can’t Forgive Myself’. It mirrors the EP’s ethos, channeling vibrancy through an otherwise rough palette. “It was fun working with all our friends to put it together.”
