Skinny Lister reveal ode to drifting apart, ‘Geordie Lad’

By Ben Tipple

London six-piece Skinny Lister have been busy. Over the last eighteen months the band have squeezed in the recording of their third full-length, ‘The Devil, The Heart & The Fight’, among a flurry of sold out stateside headline shows and high-profile support slots, not least for Xtra Mile Recordings label-mate Frank Turner.

With a traditional folk-rock undercurrent, Skinny Lister have been making a name for themselves with their party inducing sound. Forthcoming release ‘The Devil, The Heart & The Fight’ sees them break their own mould, in places amplifying the popular influences on their sound yet retaining their fundamental roots.

“‘The Devil, The Heart & The Fight’ might be our most far reaching album yet,” the band explain. “It’s DNA is still Skinny Lister, but we’ve let ourselves off the folk leash a bit more on this album. There’s still the shantyesque and foot stomping party stuff that have become the hallmark of our live show, but we’ve allowed ourselves a few other stylistic indulgences on this record. Allowing ourselves to develop in this way keeps things interesting for us and hopefully for those who have joined Skinny for the ride!”

‘Geordie Lad’ – the video for which can be seen exclusively below – showcases these indulgences well. Only a small step away from their staple upbeat folk-punk, it builds an insatiably catchy melody around their core storytelling, presenting Skinny Lister as a leading party-folk troubadour.

“‘Geordie Lad’ is a very personal track that we hope also chimes on a more universal level,” they continue. “Written about an ex-member of Skinny Lister, it’s an ode to the breakdown of a friendship and drifting apart. It’s for anyone who’s ever wondered what an estranged friend is up to now. It’s also a little nod to the traditional song ‘Geordie Hinny’ that we used to perform in our early days.”
