First play of the new Coloured In EP, ‘Depress and Let Go’

By Ben Tipple

Despite having only released a three track demo to date, Kent trio Coloured In have been making a name for themselves in recent months. Touring alongside the likes of fellow garden of England residents Drawstring and Bristol moody rockers Fairview, the band have honed both their tracks and sound on ‘Depress and Let Go’, their debut EP proper.

“The majority of the songs have been around since the initial formation of the band,” says bassist and vocalist Tom Boughton. “All of the songs have evolved over the year we’ve been playing them but their final states are something we’re really happy with.”

Treading the line between grunge and emo, a sound continuing to emanate from the South East county, the EP offers a darker take on their influences. Driven by gloomy guitars and somber vocals, ‘Depress and Let Go’ presents an ultimately uplifting spirit led by Boughton’s writing experience.

“I didn’t have much in mind when writing the lyrics for the EP,” he explains, “it all just felt quite organic and cathartic. We discuss the ideas of heartbreak, the healing process and near death experiences. “Depress and let go” is about finally moving on from something that’s held you down in a bad place for far too long.”

The five-track release is due properly on the 10th June, available digitally via BandCamp. As part of their dedication to the scene – Boughton himself promotes shows around the South East – Coloured In are offering a little more.

“There’s a lot of people around today who’re buying vinyl and tapes because they like having something physical by the band but no way of actually listening to it,” he says of their plans. “We figured, for those kids who want something interesting, quirky and tangible, we’d offer an alternative. We’ll be releasing our EP in the style of an A5 zine, in a comic book style wallet. It’ll contain a CD in the back page and also have a download code but the book will be focussed more on the illustrations, lyrical content and additional info about the record.”
