Chases are perfectly stuck in the 90s on their ‘1991’ LP

By Ben Tipple

Having existed as the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Johnny Colvin since 2012, ‘1991’ sees Berlin based Chases cement themselves as a full band; Colvin drafting in Tom TNT Taylor and Fabs RT on bass and drums respectively.

Taking their name from a Mcclusky track, and drawing heavy influence from the 80s and 90s DIY scenes that spawned them, Chases offer an homage to the decade in question on ‘1991’.

“It’s a nod to the beginning of a particularly exciting decade in rock music,” says Tom, hinting at the mixture of angular, often distorted punk, running throughout the record’s eleven tracks. “‘1991’ runs the gamut of all things that make punk-rock music so compelling.”

Self-described as “bastard punk”, Chases present a punk-rock swagger, filled with the despondency of grunge and the experimentation of post-punk. “Born in the 70s and 80s, stuck in the 90s,” they say of themselves, expressing the enticing blend of traditional punk and grubby garage-rock. Yet as retrospective as ‘1991’ may be, it also celebrates an extremely exciting contemporary edge.

Chases will be releasing ‘1991’ on the 15th September 2016 via their Bandcamp. They’ll be launching the record at Marie Antoinette in Berlin that same day, details of which can be found on Facebook. Head to the band’s profile for more information.
