I first came into contact with Cloakroom when they supported Basement in London some years ago. I didn’t know them at the time, and despite them going over the heads of a lot of the audience, I was hooked from the first thunderous chords. It also turned out they worked with Matt Talbot of Hum, and if anyone knows me, they know how much I adore Hum.
Anyway, fast forward to 2017 and Cloakroom have a new home on Relapse Records. It is fitting for the jarring, monolithic sound that the trio deal in. Their latest track, ‘Big World’, is filled with rich layers of guitars, calls to mind the dreamy haze of 90’s space rock. The colossal riffs that provide the backbone collide and collapse into the ether.
I can’t wait to see what this year brings for Cloakroom, and their upcoming UK tour with Russian Circles will be something very special.
