Spanish Love Songs’ brilliance is set in stone

“So just be happy,” Spanish Love Songs vocalist Dylan Slocum implores on ‘Concrete’, the video for which is dominated by the universal joy-maker, silly string. “We’re going to both die alone, if you, you can’t be happy,” Slocum adds, showcasing his desperate need for cheer. It paints a sadder picture, one that suggests an air of enforced fun in the videos frivolities. But really, ‘Concrete’ is hopeful.

The message is delivered brilliantly through Spanish Love Songs’ attitude filled punk-rock, tinged with the faintest hint of indie that likens it to fellow story-tellers The Smith Street Band and the likes of The Menzingers. The cracked vocals perfectly portray the band’s emotional state, from frustrated, downbeat and despondent to cautiously optimistic.
