A quick search reveals the scientific answer – a “lizard-hipped” dinosaur, according to everyone’s most reliable unreliable source, Wikipedia – but that isn’t the result I’m looking for. Sauropod is also a Norwegian trio that, up until the point of writing this, have released three vastly different although equally intriguing tracks. The influences are countless. It’s like listening to a compilation of alternative styles created in a way that only mainland European bands can, rightfully less fussed about genre classification than us, their pigeonholing UK counterparts.
Of the three, ‘Headphones’ is the standout track. It’s brash, shrill and fast. It keeps the rock and roll undertone that provides a small necessary facet of cohesion in Sauropod’s sound, while setting Kamillia Waal Larsen up as a ferocious vocalist. It might not be fully representative of the album, but if there’s one thing Sauropod have managed, it’s to make sure that nothing really is.
