BBC Radio 1 to air hour long Babymetal special tonight

By Ben Tipple

Love them or hate them, Babymetal have taken the UK by storm over the last few months. Turning heads at both Download Festival (appearing alongside Dragonforce) and Reading and Leeds last summer, their sold out headline show at London’s Wembley Arena earlier this month is testament to their success. It’s an interesting concept to say the least; three young Japanese girls breaking out of their homeland with a unique blend of J-Pop and metal. It also brings with it a lot of questions, some of which may be answered this evening (GMT) on BBC Radio 1.

The station is airing an hour long documentary looking into their journey from Japan to Wembley, kicking off at 21:00 GMT. Fingers crossed it will answer some of the questions regarding their formation and entourage, but if nothing else it’ll be an interesting listen.

“Dev heads to Tokyo to learn more about the pop-culture that’s spawned the band,” the Radio 1 website explains. “He enters the world of traditional J-Pop idols (including Katy Perry endorsed Kyary Pamyu Pamyu), explores the Japanese rock scene (with Crossfaith), learns about kawaii fashion in Harajuku (Tokyo’s equivalent to Camden Market) and has a wild karaoke night with a band called Ladybaby.”
