Secret Lives of the Freemasons

By paul

Paul: Hello, who are you and what do you do in the band?
Secret: My name is Brien Worsham and I sing.

Paul: As you’re quite new to UK audiences, it would be great if you could introduce your band and tell us all about your sound and the type of bands that you are influenced by…
Secret: We are Secret Lives! of the Freemasons. Our sound is a mix of pop and rock and roll. We have been know in the past to be a heavier band but we just wanted to take a step forward and do something that would reach a broader fan base. bands we are influenced by would be across the board. Anything from Deftones to country. We are fans of all kinds of music.

Paul: How did the band get together?
Secret: The band actually formed after after the breakup of two local bands in our town of Asheville NC. Travis(drums) and I were in a band called Throwing Myself. Justin(guitar) Jim(guitar) Tucker(guitar) and Josh(bass) were in a band called A kiss before dying. Both bands actually broke up the same night to form Secret Lives!

Paul: What’s the story behind the band name? If you had secret lives, what would you do with them?
Secret: At the time of naming the band we were all into conspiracy theory. Like aliens freemasons and all that. We just thought it would be a funny name and it stuck. Everyone has secret lives but if we told you about them they wouldn’t be so secret anymore! haha.

Paul: How did you hook up with Astro Magnetics?
Secret: Through a now ex-friend.

Paul: You released ‘This Was Built To Make You Dance’ on the label, do you think this record is a fair representation of the band in 2007/8?
Secret: Not really anymore. We still love to play some of the songs from that record but we just feel we have moved it up a notch and started doing something that we really enjoy. At the time we wrote that record it did mean a lot to us. We just feel that what we are doing now really represents who we are at this time.

Paul: I read one review of the record that branded you ‘violent and sexist towards women’ with song titles like “I Fought the Broad (And the Broad Won)”. How does it feel to be tarnished like this?!
Secret: I think the album was taken out of context on some reviews. We are not sexist nor do we dislike women. We actually very much enjoy them. That whole record was written after a very long relationship i was in. I wrote those lyrics about someone not women in general.

Paul: How stoked are you for a new Glassjaw record?!
Secret: I must admit I am pretty stoked. I love that band and what they mean to our style of music. We get that we sound like them all the time. I don’t really see it but i guess everyone has their opinion. This may be another reason we changed our style so drastically. We don’t want people to think we are trying to be anyone but us.

Paul: You recently inked a deal with Victory – how did that come about and what attracted you to the label?
Secret: Our friends in Four Letter lie actually put us in contact with them.
Victory is a standard in the rock/hardcore world. I have been listening to bands on victory records since I was around 15 years old. it is now awesome that I can say my band is on the label.

Paul: I understand that you are currently writing/recording a new record for Victory. Which producer are you working with? How is the recording process going?
Secret: We just finish up our album with producer Jamie King(between the buried and me, He is legend, Far less) It was an amazing thing to work with Jamie. He just has an amazing ear for music.

Paul: Do you have a title for the record confirmed or any song titles?
Secret: The record is going to be called “The weekend warriors!” and will be out in February of next year. Some of the song titles are “Chug and leave” “Dirty laundry” “Mascara.”

Paul: As a band do you have any long term goals you look to achieve? What do you believe to be a success?
Secret: We just hope that one day we can play to more people and just spread the word about our band. As far as success goes we would just like to be comfy. Like if I could buy a house from this one day I’d be stoked.

Paul: When can we expect to see you tour the UK?
Secret: We hope to be there next year at some point!

Paul: If you have a message for our readers, please leave it here!
Secret: We’d just like to say that we hope you enjoy our new record as we put a lot of hard time and work into making it for you. and for all of our fans WE LOVE YOU!
