The Last Gang take us on a journey through time with everything from late ’80s Hole-esque grunge to ’90s Distillers punk rock and even early-day Pretty Reckless. It’s not just that lead singer Brenna Red’s husky voice is a sultry amalgamation of Courtney Love, Brody Dalle and Taylor Momsen’s vocals, there’s also a retro quality that leaves a mark on the modern day punk scene.
The fact that they’ve only just released their debut despite being active since 2004 makes them somewhat a hidden wonder, but ‘Keep Them Counting’ will surely put them on the map. It’s obvious from the first bassline of super catchy single, ‘Sing For Your Supper’, as every element of the song syncs up to create an infectious introduction with a great hook.
The vivacious ‘Blood Drunk’ is packed with raw ’80s punk influence and a political value that could rival Anti-Flag’s best, and though their entire sound is reminiscent of bands like Rancid and Misfits, who pioneered the genre, they don’t sound like a knock off or tribute band. Instead, The Last Gang mould what came before them into something unique, and in true punk spirit, on their own terms.
Aside from Red’s powerhouse voice, it’s the drums that stand out most, with everything from classic punk fills to surf rock beats, as shown on ‘Karla’. ‘Nobody’s Prostitute’ is played so fast that it leaves you feeling giddy, but also craving more and when paired with slapping bass runs and catchy guitar riffs, it’s an irresistible body of work.
Album closer ‘Secret Sounds’ reaches for the acoustic guitar for the first and only time. It’s a pleasant song that showcases a different side of the band, but without compromising on the spirit that they’ve set out to achieve. A spirit that no doubt comes from the fact that they’ve now hit the ground running after many years of passion, hunger and commitment. ‘Keep Them Counting’ isn’t just good, it’s a genuinely fun album that’ll undoubtedly satisfy punk lovers looking for their new favourite band.
