Fullshore – ‘Cherish’

By Mark Johnson

Alt-rock newcomers Fullshore invite you on a journey from calm reflection to upbeat catchiness with their second EP ‘Cherish’, to arrive at a destination filled with potential and promise. Across four tracks the band offer a variety of tempos and moods which not only proves their ability as songwriters but also suggests a rich vein of creativity that will set them in good stead for future records.

‘Kendal’ sets a minimalistic vibe, opening the EP with just vocals and a guitar. This exposed atmosphere emphasises the quality of the vocals from the start; the combination of soothing tones and an authentic delivery gives ‘Cherish’ an assured beginning that’s reminiscent of fellow alternative-emo act Middle Distance. At just the right moment, ‘Kendal’ gets an injection of urgency from the rhythm section, changing the direction of the track and demonstrating the band’s ability to pace a song for optimum effect.

‘This Time Around’ flows seamlessly from the opener before ‘Wine’ offers the first dose of catchy, upbeat chords and vocal hooks. Fullshore save their best work till last with closing track ‘Wither’, a synergy of the EP’s best elements that creates a powerhouse of melody and tempo changes to leave you reaching for the repeat button.

‘Cherish’ is an accomplished EP that flourishes due to its clever contrasts. The calm, emotional atmosphere of the opening half provokes reflection and serenity before the second half turns up the pace for a more catchy, upbeat experience. The sparring of the main vocals, which are assured and gentle, against the intense, urgent backing vocals creates another effective contrast and is one of the reasons ‘Wither’ is such an effective song. This vocal interplay is an effect that could be utilised even more as it gives the band a signature style and elevates their sound. With a record as well paced and varied as ‘Cherish’, Fullshore are well on their way to forging a successful career and a solid fanbase.
