COVE – ‘We Were Once Lost’

By Jess Tagliani

Formed in the last few months of 2015, COVE have always strived to create massive tracks, featuring huge grooves and dominant, compelling riffs. By teaming up with producer Oz Craggs of Feed the Rhino, this quintet have done just that with their latest release ‘We Were Once Lost’.

Intro ‘…’ is dark, heavy and furious, which gives a vague idea as to how the rest of ‘We Were Once Lost’ will play out. ‘No Place’ cuts through with aggressive and rough-hewn vocals, layered on top of visceral, meaty riffs, whilst tracks ‘Dead Sea’ and ‘Found At Last’ are tenacious and vigorous, laden with thudding, muscular grooves. COVE do show a softer side, however, with instrumental ‘Sonder’ – an easy break in the midst of a storm, it’s a gentle track that shows a great amount of talent, especially from vocalist Sam King. His clean vocals are absolutely superb, before cutting in with his huge screams.

Single ‘Buried’ is packed with bruising, thunderous riffs, complete with a huge chorus that crashes down on brief, melodic respites. COVE continue with their onslaught of hardcore, creating stomping tracks in the form of closing track ‘An Honour’, which ends this release on a high – there are plenty of robust and solid riffs, combined with unyielding drum work.

‘We Were Once Lost’ is a fantastic release so, rest assured, COVE can hold their head high. It’s small but mighty, a perfect taster as to what is to come from this Kent-based quintet.
