Chasing Cadence – ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’

By James Davenport

Chasing Cadence have just released their sophomore EP, ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’, which has been making waves that are quickly propelling them to the forefront of the alternative music scene. Having sold out their EP release show as well as airtime on Daniel P. Carter’s Radio 1 Rock Show, the Hertfordshire quintet are clearly on the rise.

It’s not hard to see the appeal, though, as ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’ takes no prisoners with it’s balls to wall opener, ‘It’s Not the Length That Counts, It’s What You Do With It’, a frenzy of rock n roll riffs and vocal harmonies. Although this song stands out from the rest of the record, due it’s sound being so different from the other tracks, it’s a great display of how talented these musicians are. Take Jack Harris’ vocal range for instance, although unique, they are at times over the course of the EP reminiscent of the vocal stylings of Keith Buckley, Mike Patton & Chester Bennington amongst others. Face it, Jack Harris is a vocal chameleon.

‘Destroy Something Beautiful’ really comes into its own with the second track ‘Harbour’, a much slower track than the opener. Layered with melodies throughout its most impressive during the chorus which is both catchy and full of well structured vocal harmonies. A similar approach is taken on ‘Everyone Relax’, the first single to be released from the EP. Again it ebbs and flows with melodies and a fast paced build ups before throwing up massive walls of sound for the chorus.

‘Watching the World’ is the second single from the record which like the closing track, ‘Dear Life’ relies on catchy hooks and punchy riffs leading into crescendos. Although something of a standard template for this genre, ‘Destroy Something Beautiful’ holds its own against the best of them. At no point does this release sound watered down or leave you easily distracted, it’s a gripping first effort. The same may not be true for a full length album and only time will tell on how one would hold up, but it’s easy to see why Chasing Cadence are getting some well deserved attention.
